What Is Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy?

Pelvic floor physiotherapy is a specialized type of physiotherapy that focuses on assessing and treating the muscles, ligaments, connective tissues, and nerves of the pelvic floor. These structures support the bladder, bowel, and uterus, while also playing an important role in bladder and bowel control, sexual function, pregnancy, postpartum recovery, and core stability. Like any muscle group, the pelvic floor can become weak, tight, or uncoordinated.

It’s one of the most researched, effective treatments for concerns that far too many women assume are just a normal part of pregnancy, birth, or getting older.

Spoiler: common doesn’t mean normal, and most of it is very treatable.

What Pelvic Floor Physio Can Help With

If any of this sounds like your day-to-day, you're in the right place.

Bladder Leaks and Incontinence

Leaking when you laugh, sneeze, run, or lift. Targeted retraining helps you rebuild control so you can stop planning your life around bathrooms.

Pelvic Pain

Pain in the pelvis, hips, or lower back, including discomfort with intimacy or exercise. Treatment addresses the muscles behind the pain, not just the symptom.

Pregnancy Support

Care for the changes your body goes through during pregnancy, plus preparation for birth so you head into delivery feeling informed and ready.

Postpartum Recovery

Rebuilding strength, healing, and confidence after delivery, whether your baby is six weeks or six years old. It's never too late to start.

Core Weakness

That "my core just doesn't fire anymore" feeling. We reconnect you with your deep core system so everyday movement and workouts feel strong again.

Return to Exercise

A clear, staged plan for getting back to running, lifting, and the activities you love without fear of symptoms coming back.

Pelvic Organ Prolapse

Stage 1 and stage 2 prolapse respond well to pelvic floor physiotherapy. Stage 3 and 4 need medical support alongside physio, and we'll help coordinate that care rather than leaving you to figure it out on your own.

Your First Appointment, Without the Mystery

Feeling nervous about booking is completely normal. Here's exactly how it works, so there are no surprises.

1

We Talk First

Your appointment starts with a conversation in a private room. Your history, your symptoms, your goals. Nothing physical happens until you understand the plan.

2

Assessment, Your Way

Your physiotherapist assesses posture, breathing, core, and hip function. This may include an internal pelvic floor assessment when it's relevant to your symptoms. It's always explained beforehand, always optional, and guided by your comfort and consent.

3

A Plan That Makes Sense

You leave understanding what's going on and why, with a treatment plan built around your life, not a generic protocol.

4

Progress You Can Feel

Follow-up sessions build on your plan with hands-on treatment, exercise, and education, adjusting as your body responds.

You've Thought About It Long Enough

Booking takes two minutes. Feeling like yourself again is worth it.

Pelvic Health Care With a Whole Team Behind It

Pelvic floor concerns rarely exist in isolation. Low back pain, hip tension, and stress all play a role. At Refined, your physiotherapist works under the same roof as registered massage therapists, acupuncturists, and a kinesiologist, so if another discipline can support your recovery, the conversation happens in-house, not through a referral you have to chase.

One Coordinated Plan

Your practitioners communicate with each other, so your care actually connects.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a doctor's referral for pelvic floor physiotherapy in BC?

No. Physiotherapy is direct access in British Columbia, so you can book with us right away. One heads up, some extended health plans require a doctor’s referral for reimbursement, so it’s worth a quick check with your provider.

Is pelvic floor physiotherapy covered by insurance?

Yes, in most cases. It’s billed as physiotherapy, which the majority of extended health plans cover. We direct bill to most major providers, and we’ll always give you a detailed receipt.

What should I expect at my first appointment?

A private conversation about your history and goals, an assessment guided entirely by your comfort and consent, and a clear treatment plan you actually understand. Nothing happens without your okay, at every step.

How soon after giving birth can I start pelvic floor physio?

Many patients begin around six weeks postpartum, and gentle education and guidance can start even earlier. If there’s still active bleeding we wait a little longer, and some cases need medical clearance first, especially if there were complications during delivery. And if your baby is a toddler, a teenager, or grown? It’s genuinely never too late to start.

Is leaking when I laugh or sneeze just normal after having kids?

It’s common, but it’s not something you have to accept. Stress incontinence responds really well to pelvic floor physiotherapy, and for most women it’s very treatable.

Does pelvic floor physiotherapy help with pelvic organ prolapse?

Yes. Stage 1 and stage 2 prolapse respond well to pelvic floor physiotherapy. Stage 3 and 4 need medical intervention alongside physiotherapy, and we’ll help coordinate that care rather than leaving you to chase it down.
