What is Physiotherapy?
Physiotherapy is a hands-on, science-backed approach to restoring movement, reducing pain, and helping your body function the way it’s supposed to. It treats a wide range of conditions, from acute sports injuries and chronic back pain to neurological recovery and pelvic floor concerns.
Your physiotherapist begins with a thorough assessment to understand what’s causing your symptoms, not just where they show up. From there, you receive a personalized treatment plan using techniques chosen for your specific situation: manual therapy, targeted exercise, dry needling, shockwave therapy, or a combination of several.
Physiotherapy is a collaborative process. You and your physiotherapist work together at every visit, adjusting the plan as your body responds. Most patients notice meaningful progress within the first few sessions.

What to Expect
Step 1: We listen
Your first appointment starts with a conversation. Your physiotherapist takes the time to understand your history, your symptoms, and what you want to get back to doing.
Step 2: We assess
A thorough physical assessment identifies the root cause of your symptoms, not just where it hurts right now.
Step 3: We build your plan
You’ll leave your first session with a clear, personalized treatment plan and a realistic sense of what to expect over the coming visits.
Step 4: We adjust as you improve
Every follow-up builds on the last. Your physiotherapist tracks your progress and adapts the plan as your body responds, so you’re never stuck following a program that’s stopped working.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a referral to see a physiotherapist in BC?
No. You can book directly without a doctor’s referral. If you have extended health benefits, check with your provider, as some plans may have their own requirements.
Does ICBC cover physiotherapy after a car accident?
Yes. ICBC covers physiotherapy for injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident in BC, with no user fees and no referral required. Contact our South Surrey clinic and we’ll help you get started.
Does WCB cover physiotherapy for a workplace injury?
Yes. We’re registered to accept WCB claims for physiotherapy, so if you’ve been hurt on the job, you can book with us directly. Bring your claim number to your first appointment and we’ll take it from there.
Do I need my WCB claim number before I book?
It helps speed things up, but you don’t need it to get started. If your claim number hasn’t come through yet, give us a call at (604) 606-7519 and we’ll help you figure out the next step before your first visit.
Do you accept WCB for massage therapy or other services?
Right now, WCB coverage at our clinic applies to physiotherapy only. If you’re not sure what your specific claim covers, call us and we’ll help you sort out what applies before you book.
Is physiotherapy covered by extended health benefits?
Most Canadian extended health plans include physiotherapy coverage. Annual limits and coverage amounts vary by plan. We direct bill many providers. Not sure what your plan covers? Call us before your first session and we’ll help you find out.
What should I wear to my physiotherapy appointment?
Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows your physiotherapist to assess the area. Shorts are helpful for lower body concerns. A tank top or sleeveless shirt works well for shoulder or upper back issues.
How many physiotherapy sessions will I need?
It depends on your condition and how your body responds. Your physiotherapist will give you a realistic timeline at your first appointment. Many patients feel a meaningful difference within three to five visits.
What is IMS or dry needling?
IMS (Intramuscular Stimulation) targets tight, shortened muscles with fine needles to release tension and relieve pain. It differs from acupuncture in its focus and technique. At RIH, IMS is available with Kristine Nidea as a standalone service or as part of a physiotherapy session.
What is pelvic floor physiotherapy?
Pelvic floor physiotherapy addresses the muscles and connective tissue that support your bladder, bowel, and reproductive organs. It treats pelvic pain, incontinence, postpartum recovery, and pregnancy-related changes. Internal assessment is available when appropriate and is always discussed and consented to beforehand. Available exclusively with Kristine Nidea.
Can physiotherapy help with chronic pain?
Yes. Chronic pain responds well to physiotherapy, particularly when treatment includes manual therapy, targeted exercise, and techniques like IMS or shockwave for conditions that have been stuck for a long time. Your physiotherapist will assess what’s driving the pain and build a plan from there.
What is shockwave therapy?
Shockwave therapy uses high-energy sound waves to stimulate healing in stubborn, chronic conditions like plantar fasciitis, calcific tendinitis, and Achilles tendinopathy. It’s particularly effective for injuries that haven’t responded to other treatments. Available with both Kristine Nidea and Mehtab Gondara.
What is Therapeutic Ultrasound?
Therapeutic ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to deliver energy into muscles, tendons, ligaments, and other soft tissues. This treatment can help increase circulation, reduce pain, improve tissue mobility, and support the healing process following injury.
Ultrasound is commonly used for tendon injuries, muscle strains, ligament sprains, scar tissue restrictions, and chronic soft tissue conditions. When combined with hands-on treatment and exercise therapy, it can help improve mobility and support a more effective rehabilitation process.
What is ITO Electrotherapy (TENS/NMES)?
Our ITO electrotherapy unit uses Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) and Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) to support pain management and rehabilitation.
TENS uses gentle electrical stimulation to help reduce pain and discomfort by influencing how pain signals are processed by the nervous system. NMES stimulates muscle contractions, which can help improve muscle activation, strength, and recovery following injury or surgery.
These therapies are often incorporated into a comprehensive rehabilitation plan alongside physiotherapy, exercise prescription, and manual therapy to help patients manage symptoms, restore function, and return to their daily activities with confidence.
At Refined Integrated Health, therapeutic ultrasound and electrotherapy are integrated when appropriate to support healing, improve recovery outcomes, and help patients achieve their rehabilitation goals.
